Decorative Handmade Paper Mache Vase in Cream by Julie & Ev

The Best Last Minute Housewarming Gift Ideas for 2022

New homeowners will always appreciate a thoughtful housewarming gift. They’ve just moved into their new home, so they probably need some things to spruce it up and make it feel a little more comfortable!

If you’re going to a party hosted by new homeowners or just visiting, chances are you’re thinking of picking something up for them as a congratulatory token. Everyone’s excited about this new development in their lives, and a thoughtful gift could be the perfect way for you to express your support and happiness for them.

Before you start shopping, make sure to keep these basic gifting etiquette rules in mind:

Gifting Etiquette for New Homeowners

1. Check if they have a gift registry open.

Sometimes we can get too excited about shopping for gifts and forget to check out the things that our friends really want or need. If these new homeowners have sent out a wishlist or gift registry, it wouldn’t hurt to look through them first before shopping. This lets you gain a general idea of what they actually want, and it’s almost guaranteed that they’ll love your present already! If anything, it makes your life easier - just add the item to your cart and go.

In case they don’t have a registry open, it’s also okay to straight up ask them what they’d want to receive. They’ll definitely appreciate you a lot more for taking the time to think about their needs!

2. Wrap it up or put it in a bag.

There are two main reasons for wrapping a housewarming gift: to make it look pretty, and for privacy (for both the gift-giver and receiver). Taking a little time to wrap your present can show that you put a lot more thought and effort into it. On the other hand, some people might prefer unwrapping gifts later on after all the festivities are over. They may want to keep their reaction or the gift itself private from the other guests, so it’s just a matter of keeping it respectful.

3. Include a gift receipt (just in case).

Gift receipts can be useful in the unfortunate event that you get a duplicate gift or the new homeowners don’t like the item you got them. Hopefully, the latter doesn’t happen, but if ever it does, don’t take it personally! It’s just basic gifting etiquette. A gift receipt is just something nice to have in case of necessary returns, to save your friends the hassle.

4. Try to find something personalized.

This is one of the most important rules in gifting etiquette! Nothing’s sadder than a generic, impersonal housewarming gift that will most likely just add clutter and stress to a fresh new home. Instead of getting the nth wine glass set or placemat, try to think of what your friends would really appreciate and use on a regular basis. This is where gift registries can be useful!

5. Don’t overspend.

It’s a common misconception in gifting etiquette that the more you spend, the better. This is actually a bad idea most of the time, for two reasons: you might go over your budget, and extravagant gifts might make some people uncomfortable. The best way to go is with something simple, useful, and–most of all–meaningful.
